The narwhal is also known as the "unicorn of the sea." The association of the narwhal with unicorns stems from ancient legends and myths. In the Middle Ages, sailors and explorers returning from the northern seas often recounted stories of strange sea creatures, including narwhals, whose tusks were considered as the horns of mythical unicorns.
