FAQs: All your questions about nautical jewelry answered

Angela Lago working in her jewelry atelier in Madrid

Who creates the jewelry and where?

The jewelry is designed and handcrafted exclusively by me, Angela Lago, in my Studio-Atelier located at Calle Mayor 6 in Madrid. You are welcome to visit by appointment.

Casting, stone setting, and electroplating are specialized crafts within the world of jewelry making. Therefore, I only outsource these specific steps to some of the best specialists in Madrid.

In summary, my creations always begin, develop, and finish in my hands. Occasionally, in the midst of this creative process, they pass through the hands of other specialized craftsmen for specific steps required in the creation of some of my pieces.

Are the nautical jewelry pieces artesanal made?

Yes, they are 100% handmade. There is no 3D design or industrial production involved—simply because I do not enjoy creating that way. Everything is crafted using traditional techniques that have been practiced for centuries. I love exploring craftsmanship for creative purposes, to tell a story that literally comes from my hands and my heart, ensuring an organic continuity. I cherish the analog process; after all, I was born in ’73.

What materials do you use for the handmade jewelry?

Most of my pieces are crafted from 100% sterling silver, with some made from bronze and others from brass, each metal chosen as a creative resource. I enjoy the contrast between the finest and the roughest elements. I also create custom pieces in gold upon request.

Additionally, I use pearls and gemstones, often in their raw form but sometimes polished. The most commonly used stones are black diamonds, sapphires, aquamarines, and emeralds.

The selection of materials serves both expressive and aesthetic purposes.

Are the jewelry pieces solid metal?

Yes, the vast majority of my pieces are solid metal. I work directly with the metal or use lost-wax casting (microfusion). Only in some cases, if the pieces are very large, do I hollow them out by emptying the initial wax to make them more wearable. But typically, they are solid.

There are also some pieces made of copper using a process called electroforming. This is specified in the information for each piece when applicable. The use of this technique is a resource and a form of exploration. Sometimes, I create similar pieces using different methods and materials, depending on what I seek to achieve in each case. It’s an artistic exploration through the medium of jewelry.

“In my jewelry and in all my art, I create what I love most, what I believe in, and what is necessary for an art that could not exist without the artist's creative passion and the precious materials used. These, however, have no real importance on their own. The beauty and value of the jewel lie entirely in my idea.” — Salvador Dalí

I fully subscribe to this idea by Dalí, which resonated with me even before I started designing jewelry, during my visit to the Dalí Museum in Figueres.

Do you have the jewelry pieces in stock?

Sometimes I do, but not always. It depends on the piece and the current demand.

If you want to know if the piece you’re interested in is in stock or how long it will take for me to create and send it to you, please inquire via email or WhatsApp. I will be happy to respond within 24-48 hours.

Keep in mind that all the work is handmade by me personally, so it takes “its own time”. This is one of the elements that makes these pieces so special and why they radiate such magnetism when you hold them in your hands.

If the piece is in stock, it will be shipped within 1-3 days and then delivered quickly by DHL (they are very fast, well-organized, and handle shipments worldwide).

If the piece is not in stock, the time it takes will depend on the specific piece and the time of year, but generally, it takes between 2 and 6 weeks. Threrefore, If it is essential for you to have your jewelry for a special date, I recommend that you place your order at least 6 weeks in advance, since I prepare the orders in the order they arrive.

Do you create custom nautical jewelry?

I only create custom versions of my own designs. I can also make them in 18k gold upon request.

Why is the sea your sole source of inspiration?

The sea has been a constant element in my life, a connection I’ve always been acutely aware of. I fully identify with the sea and its culture. I was born in Vigo on the Day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a date I've always seen as a gift from destiny, a happy coincidence that strengthens my bond with the sea.

Belonging to the “Cousteau generation,” I watched his episodes, collected the magazines and slides, and, like many from that era, fantasized about studying marine sciences. Although I chose to live in Madrid, knowing it would separate me from my element,” I've always longed for the sea. Madrid has given me a lot and it is my city, but I have constantly missed the sea. Whenever I have a moment, I need to go and breathe in and feel the sea.

I gave up the possibility of enjoying sailing and other nautical sports as often and deeply as I wished. I had to choose, and while I don't regret it, I have always carried that longing with me. Now, I have finally found a way to reconcile this essential part of my life and channel my love for the sea through my creativity.

What do you think makes your pieces so special?

My pieces create and recreate my inner marine universe, which makes them unique. They are authentic and possess a creative coherence that comes from my very essence. They are made from the heart, not with the goal of "pleasing," but to express what I truly feel. Each piece bears the distinct mark of craftsmanship and imperfection, which gives them a very real beauty. For me, design is a path of personal exploration and growth. This authenticity and depth in my designs distinguish them from others, and many people perceive this, connecting strongly with the pieces.

I believe they resonate particularly well with free-spirited individuals who don’t follow the crowd. This type of spirit is very common among sailors and sea lovers in general. They often appreciate my work and I infinitely admire them. They are one of my sources of inspiration.

How do I care for my jewelry?

That's all here

Do brass jewelry pieces stain?

No, the brass we use is of very high quality and does not stain.

This brass is jewelry-grade and nickel-free. It should not stain the skin, unlike standard brass used in costume jewelry or hardware.

Therefore, it is generally safe and does not cause staining. However, I cannot guarantee it 100%, as everyone has a unique body chemistry, and factors such as skin pH, sweat, and humidity can influence this.
